Zack Snyder's Justice League
Director: Zach Snyder
Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, and more
Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions.
Okay, I saw the original version of Justice League in theatres back in 2017 and it wasn't terrible. It wasn't as dark as I expected the film based on the popular DC comics to be but it wasn't a bad film.
Then I watched Zack Snyder's Justice League. Yeah, it was just over four hours but... I loved every single minute of it.
While there are a lot of familiar scenes from the first film, the Zack Snyder version took a decent film and made it much better. It gave us a spectacular Cyborg story arc that you realize was obliterated in the first film. It gives you Darkseid, the real villain of the film who was also cut from the first film. You get impressive special effects, real emotional investment, and a nightmare vision of the future featuring Jared Leto's Joker.
Where was that guy in the original Suicide Squad? We didn't get the "We live in a society..." line in the film (Snyder did release that clip on social media). But hey, we're lucky we got the Snyder cut at all, right?
We also got Justice is Gray which is a stunning black and white version of the film in 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos on supported devices. It lends a moodiness to the film in this version that I personally prefer.
While the original storyline is intact, Batman assembles his team of warriors, decides to resurrect Superman, and takes on bad guys from somewhere else, the Snyder cut is a love letter to devoted comic fans that I highly recommend. It's more violent but it makes more sense and hints at a possible future we aren't likely to see in the DC film universe as it now exists.
Rated R for violence and language. It's literally 4 hours and 2 minutes in length.
