AT THE MOVIES

Infinity Pool
Director: Brandon Cronenberg
Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman, and more.

While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror.

I didn't know a lot about this one going into it. You start out with James and Em who go beyond the resort grounds even though they are warned not to. It doesn't take long for James to find himself in an awful situation as a result. What happens next? A price had to be paid for his crime and you could never guess who ended up paying that price. And even if you could, it would break you. But somehow James isn't broken, despite his intial upset. He slips further into a world of madness and depravity.

This film is deeply unsettling, even if you're a hardcore horror fan. It really is. Brandon Cronenberg makes this a difficult one to watch and it's not for the faint of heart or the younger set of scary movie fans. It's brutal on both a physical and psychological level and I'd honestly have to say I couldn't watch it again.

That's not to say it isn't a well made movie. It is with a strong cast. It's just unlike any other horror film you've ever seen and tips its hat to the recently diminished torture porn subgenre. It's R rating really pushes the envelope and the film is just under two hours.

Proceed with caution friends. I don't say that lightly.
